In an age when business profit was the sole focus, J. T. Polk was a pioneer in his concern for the well being of his employees treating them as extended members of his family.

At one point, newspaper ads were circulated for workers outside of the area, offering boarding house facilities with gasoline stoves for cooking, tables chairs, dishes sleeping cots all for 10 cents a day! A generous stipulation went along with this offer. Dt5FW6a9x if the boarder did not get at least 3 hours of work on a particular day it was no charge!

Employees did piece work essentially paid by the bucket! For each bucket of peeled tomatoes, shucked corn and other crops they received work tokens that could be exchanged for boarding, personal necessities and cash;this system of payment was used into the 1920s. The Polk Cannery barrelled like a steam locomotive as comntented employees pushed a sucessfull operation forward. under the name Polk's Best.

The Polk Canning Factory was the site of one of the first libraries in Greenwood. Under the name of The Polk Social Institue its purpose was to better the community as a whole and provide a cultural center for the residents of Greenwood. In 1894 a fourth floor warehouse auditorium was established with seating for 3000. An elevator was available as the venue opened to the general public. Two pianos, music teachers and a librarian were always on hand. The library included several thousands of books, and a dollar a year bought you the right to borrow books and also attend any lecture held in the facility. Polk's library, however, was not very popular and was discontinued in 1896.

The original canning factory burned in December of 1906. the fire discovered around 2:30 AM by a night watchman. A series of mishaps after the discovery and a lack of water from Greenwood utilities assisted in the destruction. Operations temporarily moved to branch plants in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. The business was very well insured, resulting in a quick rebuild. The Polk Institute was not re established in the new building.

Prior to the cannery fire in 1906, Polk had formulated another business venture, that for him, seemed a natural off shoot of what he was already doing, and another invaluable service for the citizens of Greenwood, Indiana. The cheap nfl football jerseys canning factory produced a lot of waste vines, corn husks, and left over vegetables. Polk built the first silo in Indiana to store this waste as feed. This evolved into the forming of a dairy. He purchased 100 Jersey cows and began milk production as a subcontractor for Tanglewood Dairy in nearby Indianapolis. The Polk Dairy Company soon sailed, also sharing with the vegetables the familar monogram Polk's Best. In the early 1900s the operation was officially titled as Polk Sanitary Milk Company.

The Greenwood dairy was located at the top of the slight rise east of the canning operation. One of the first the first customers of Polk's Best milk was former president, General Benjamin Harrison serviced daily, as were hundreds of other customers, by a dedicated fleet of Polk delivery trucks. Two new barns that would house 60 cows in each, were built in October of 1923. Twice a day 120 cows were milked by hand, involving 6 to 8 people each round. The Polk Sanitary Milk Company was noted for producing high fat Jersey Cow nursery milk high in fat and marketed to parents as beneficial to infants.

The Polk farming operation continued to be an important factor in the dairy operation until sometime in the China Wholesale Youth Football Jerseys 1950s when it was sold. http://www.internationalmagicsociety.org/blogs/post/8355
